“Too many times he has kissed my breath away and left me standing speechless.”

Synopsis:

Logan Knight is a real life knight in shining armor.
A detective godsend in a sleek black suit has me thinking less than secretive thoughts. Brooding and mysterious, he’s the kind of guy every girl instantly notices. Between his seductive smirk and charming good looks, it’s no wonder I can’t help the way he makes me feel whenever I’m near him.
Too bad he’s unavailable—or so he says.

He thinks I’m a do-gooder who shouldn’t get involved with a guy like him. His past is messy and relationships just add to that. He insists the timing is all wrong and he’s devoted to his career, but I don’t buy that excuse for a second. I see the way his body tenses and his jaw ticks every time another guy is around me. He just won’t admit it, but I’m more determined than ever to show him what he’s missing.

I’m a devoted animal rescuer and I’ll risk everything to save them, but when a dramatic turn of events puts both our lives at risk, I’m positive Logan will write me off for good. But when he asks for my help with a personal crisis, I know it’s my last chance to finally show him I can handle anything he throws my way—messy past and all.

He might think he has me all figured out, but I’ll prove him wrong no matter what he thinks. This game of push and pull has me running in circles. One wrong move and we could both lose.

Checkmate, Knight.

My Thoughts:

Oh wow! I loved Traviola, I loved Drewtney, but Layla might be my favorite! There is just something about second chance romances that just give the rest of us so much hope!

I thought the book was well paced and definitely kept me reading. There were a few fillers that were confusing and did not necessarily need to be there. I liked that this book crept a little bit more into the suspense genre since Logan is a cop and Kayla has a lot of unknowns in her past. I will tell you that some of the twists were predictable but some of them definitely came as a shock. The shocking twist…man I don’t know what to think about it and I need the mystery solved asap! I loved getting to catch up with the characters from the previous duets, but I sometimes felt that it was forced and did not help further the story. However, it was fun getting to see where Traviola and Drewtney are in their lives! I am anxious to read the next book because the end of this book left us all hanging, which I both love and hate.

Logan: SWOON! I freaking love Logan and his protective nature and his willingness to do whatever he can for those he loves. I was heartbroken to hear about his personal demons and what he has had to deal with for several years. He makes my heart melt but he also makes me crazy because I just want to boot him in the ass when he is acting like an asshole.

Kayla: Sweet sweet Kayla. She is the most compassionate, loving character I have ever read about. She volunteers in various places and has a huge heart for dogs looking for a forever home. She has a past that left me heartbroken too 😦 but despite it all…she is still the nicest human ever. I want to read more about her past in the next book because there is still a lot we don’t know about her. I felt like the last book was focused more on Logan and his past and I am hoping that the next one will be focused more on Kayla’s. I feel like I connected with Kayla on a whole different level because we are both hopeless romantics looking for out Knight in shining armor and I just loved that optimism in Kayla!

I highly suggest you pick this book up because it is a good escape book. It is a really easy read with some steamy hot love scenes and some amazing characters (both human and canines). Layla just made me happy, which is all I can really ask for in a good romance read!

Overall Rating: ★★★★/★★★★★
