Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #1), Laurell K. Hamilton

“Most hatred is based on fear, one way or another. Yeah. I wrapped myself in anger, with a dash of hate, and at the bottom of it all was an icy center of pure terror.”

Guilty Pleasures took me by surprise. It was not what I was expecting, it was better than. I am such a sucker for Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance- so starting the Anita Blake series was a no brainer once a friend recommended them.  This is an older series (published first in early 90’s) but also an incomplete one- 25 (holy shit) books and counting.

Synopsis:

Ever since the Supreme Court granted the undead equal rights, most people think vampires are just ordinary folks with fangs. I know better. I’ve seen their victims. I carry the scars…

But now a serial killer is murdering vampires—and the most powerful bloodsucker in town wants me to find the killer…

In a world where vampires, zombies and werewolves have been declared legal citizens of the United States, Anita Blake is an “animator” – a profession that involves raising the dead for mourning relatives. But Anita is also known as a fearsome hunter of criminal vampires, and she’s often employed to investigate cases that are far too much for conventional police. But as Anita gains the attention of the vampire masters of her hometown of St Louis, she also risks revealing an intriguing secret about herself – the source of her unusual strength and power.

Anita is my fictional soulmate (I have several, but still). Blake has absolutely no fucks left to give in this world, and is not afraid to remind people of that in any way she can. She is one hell of an ass kicker, loves her guns, her Nikes and her faith. But she is also rather vulnerable in some cases, and I like that she embraces it but moves the fuck on and continues to kick ass.

In Guilty Pleasures, we are kind of thrown into a world already thriving, and it works for me. Some might find that a deterrent, don’t let it- the cast of characters envelope you in and you forget that you don’t have all the answers. You get so caught up in the moment of all the action.

But is there romance? (the only question really worth knowing the answer to, am I right?) Yes- and no. Ish.

Enter, Jean Claude, Master Vampire, flowy-shirt extraordinaire. Here we have a swoon worthy, not is all as it seems, stud-muffin (yeah, I said it)- who does not deny is attraction to Anita, and Anita cannot lie about her attraction either (literally, she cannot lie to him- and no, that is not any kind of spoiler). This is going to be a slow burn, a dance until they crash into each other in a fiery ball of all-consuming passion…

Or so I theorize – and from what I hear… well… see notes at the bottom if you’re interested.

MOVING ON- Guilty Pleasures: someone is killing vampires, Anita must fine that someone…or thing, and if she doesn’t, welp… then we wouldn’t have 25 books, would we?

There are some pretty bad ass, terrifying,  baddies, and a few “awww” moments too, some heart breaking and some wicked sass from more than just Anita.

Y’all, Anita is the queen of sarcasm. I want to hi-five her, after I am done snorting at her comments. She has a dry kind of humor and also inappropriate at times – like I said, my fictional soul mate.

The Anita Blake series is urban fantasy, sprinkled with sexual tension, mixed with horror, dash of whodunnit, a whole lot of ass kicking and one feisty female lead.

I’ll leave it at that, since there will be more Anita reviews to come- not sorry.

Additional NOTES:

So, I read a few reviews about the series as a whole, and many say the first 5-6 books are great, and then Anita apparently turns into some kind of slut queen and readers just gave up, upset, mildly disgusted… Well, let me tell you- I AM READY FOR IT (and I am only on book 3 at the time of writing this). BRING ON THE SMEXY SMEXY TIMES.
