REVIEW: Fallen Heir (The Royals #4) by Erin Watt

I feel like I’m cracking open my chest and letting her see inside. It’s not pretty there, but I don’t want to let her go.

These Royals will ruin you.

Easton Royal has it all: looks, money, intelligence. His goal in life is to have as much fun as possible. He never thinks about the consequences because he doesn’t have to.

Until Hartley Wright appears, shaking up his easy life. She’s the one girl who’s said no, despite being attracted to him. Easton can’t figure her out and that makes her all the more irresistible.

Hartley doesn’t want him. She says he needs to grow up.

She might be right.

Rivals. Rules. Regrets. For the first time in Easton’s life, wearing a Royal crown isn’t enough. He’s about to learn that the higher you start, the harder you fall.

Charli’s Review:

I hate you Erin Watt. I mean that in the nicest way, but I still hate you because my feelings are ALL OVER THE MAP RIGHT NOW! Let me preface by saying that I do not do well with cliffhangers. I am one of those people who will not watch the season finale of a tv show until the new season is about to start to save myself some heartache. I was not expecting the heartache from this book because I thought it would be a standalone (ish) book BUT IT WASNT! I shouldn’t be surprised though because Erin Watt always leaves her books off with cliffhangers.

The Story. This was a fan-freaking-tastic story from the beginning to the end….truly. There was one major plot twist that I kind of predicted, but it is currently unresolved so we will see if I actually predicted it right. Fallen Heir was well written and had am amazing pace to it. One minute I was just starting it and the next I was finished with my jaw gaping open trying to figure out WTF just happened. The drama in this story was perfect and such a guilty pleasure for me. Everything was just so good.

Easton Royal. Fallen Heir follows Easton’s POV and normally I am hesitant about an all male POV, but not with this book. I was hooked from line one and devoured this book like a woman starved. Easton is impulsive, reckless, and never one to tolerate being bored, which normally lands him in trouble. I have been waiting for Easton’s story for what feels like FOREVER! I finally got his story and it was everything and more. Easton is always ready with his charm and sexual innuendos, but the people who know him know he is just hiding a deeper pain left behind from his mother’s suicide and his mentor’s true character. I wanted to wrap my arms around Easton and never let him go in order to protect him from the world.

Hartley Wright. Hartley comes into this story with her focus set on school and surviving the cruel hand that she was dealt. She was not ready for Easton to bombard her life and try anything he could to get in her pants. Hartley seemed to be immune to Easton’s charms and strived to have absolutely nothing to do with him. She didn’t bank on Easton being so persistent. Hartley caved when Easton proposed they be friends and they soon started hanging out. Hartley is so guarded against Easton and is reluctant to share her past with him. I loved her feistiness and her willingness to protect her family.

Side Characters. There were several side characters that I really enjoyed in this story. Ella being a major one because I was anxious to see how her and Reed were doing. Reed was not in the story at all besides phone calls which I was kind of sad about. I also loved Pasha and Bran because they always had Easton’s back on and off the football field. I HATE freaking Lauren and her bullshit relationship with the twins. She is only out for herself and I am ready for the twins to figure that out. Plus, I just want the twins book in general, but apparently we have to get the conclusion to Easton and Hartley’s story first.

I NEEEEED the next book, Cracked Kingdom, asap…I am going through some serious withdrawals already and I only just finished Fallen Heir twenty minutes ago. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy: drama, friends to lovers, drama, mysterious pasts, drama, a sarcastic, sexy hero, drama, and a feisty heroine.

If you are looking for a book that is similar in style to get you through the book hangover then I suggest the Fallen Crest Series by Tijan (aka one of my favorite authors of all time!)

Overall Rating: ★★★★★/★★★★★

Emily’s Review:

I know going into a book by Erin Watt that it’s going to kill me, but each time, I deny the fact until I read the final page and I’m sitting there, with my mouth hanging open, and my heart crushed at my feet.  Fallen Heir was no different.  In fact, this book my have killed me more than all their other books put together!

The Story:  Unlike Charli, I really struggled with this one in the beginning.  I had a hard time with Easton’s character.  I mean I’m not going to lie.  If you’ve read the Paper Princess books you know he can be kind of an asshat, but I didn’t realize how big of an asshat he was until I started reading his story.  However, once it got going, I found myself getting sucked in and letting the drama of an Erin Watt story take over.  I flew through the second half of the book, and I walked away utterly SHOCKED by what had happened.

Easton Royal:  I mean, it’s Easton.  Like a said before, he’s not a really nice guy.  And I did find it hard at first with the story being written from his POV.  To be honest, Easton is probably one of the most complex characters ever written by Erin Watt.  There’s so much about him that he keeps hidden, even from himself, that watching him start to crack is like watching a building implode.  That’s what makes him so interesting!  I cannot wait to see how this story continues, and how Easton is changed by everything happening around him.

Hartley Wright:  Hartley is probably one of my new favorite female characters.  She’s snarky, and funny and doesn’t put up with Easton’s shit.  She’s not afraid to tell him how she really feels, and I love that about her.  Plus, her entire life is such a mystery, and it makes the story that much more intriguing.  I’m really excited to see what Erin Watt does with her character in the next book!

Side Characters:  I loved seeing Ella in this book, and I was super excited for Val!  I’d missed my girls.  But, seriously, I could do without Lauren.  She’s using the twins for their money, and she’s so entitled.  She’s one of those characters who I wouldn’t be upset if something bad happened to her.  Is that mean?  It probably is, but I just dislike her that much!

I cannot wait to get my hands on Cracked Kingdom.  I need to find out what happens after that horrendous cliffhanger.  I need more Royals in my life!!
