Before I get into this series review, let me clarify what this is going to look like. This is a spoiler free review where I basically word vomit and fangirl about the incredibleness of this series. Here is the synopsis for Captive Prince:
Damen is a warrior hero to his people, and the rightful heir to the throne of Akielos. But when his half brother seizes power, Damen is captured, stripped of his identity, and sent to serve the prince of an enemy nation as a pleasure slave.
Beautiful, manipulative, and deadly, his new master, Prince Laurent, epitomizes the worst of the court at Vere. But in the lethal political web of the Veretian court, nothing is as it seems, and when Damen finds himself caught up in a play for the throne, he must work together with Laurent to survive and save his country.
For Damen, there is just one rule: never, ever reveal his true identity. Because the one man Damen needs is the one man who has more reason to hate him than anyone else…
My fellow Rad Babe, Emily, was the one to tell me to read this series because it is one of her all time favorite trilogies and we generally like the same books. And boy am I so glad that she told me to read this because IT IS ONE OF MY NEW OBSESSIONS! I have not read anything by C.S. Pacat before and I was so impressed.
The first book is all about the world building and really introducing the politics of the world as well as who the players are in this political game. I was sucked in from page one because DAMEN is my freaking everything. Damen is honorable, strong, beautiful, and finds himself betrayed by those closest to him. Damen does not think in terms like deception and secrets because he is too honest for that, which is why he was taken so off guard by the betrayal. He finds himself in enemy territory as a bed slave to one of the most dangerous men that he has ever met, Prince Laurent of Vere.
We are mostly in Damen’s head during the series so it is always a special treat to get a small glimpse into Laurent’s head. Laurent is sly, deceptive, cutthroat, and finds himself face to face with the one person he hates the most in the world. Laurent is intelligent and is always thinking ten steps ahead of everyone else as well as finding out who is going to try and kill him next. Laurent can be cruel and unforgiving and he is definitely not the war & fuzzy type.
I told Emily that Damen was Gryffindor whereas Laurent was Slytherin, but together they make an unbeatable team against those out to take what was never theirs. I don’t want to give too much away so I won’t say anything about the romance aspect of this series except that it is a slow build that is oh so sweet. In the beginning, I was wondering why the heck it was a romance book, but I eventually understood in the best of ways.
I thoroughly enjoyed Pacat’s world and really appreciate bringing these characters to life. It was entertaining, funny, intriguing, sexy, thrilling, and had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next.
I HIGHLY recommend this trilogy to those who love: M/M romance, fantasy, political games, enemies to lovers, and strong, sexy, intelligent, alpha heroes.
Overall Series Rating: ★★★★★/★★★★★
