About THE FORTUNATE ONES

At Twin Oaks Country Club, there are the fortunate ones, and then there are the rest of us: the waiters, the caddies, the valets, and in my case, the cabana girls. Most days, I’m poolside in a pleated skirt, dishing out margaritas to tycoons and titans. It’s not exactly my dream job, but it does come with one perk…

James Ashwood.

He’s my silver lining in a custom black suit.

Besides being a legacy member at the club, he’s a tech mogul and Austin’s most eligible bachelor. Oh, and those dimples? Yeah, they make my stomach dip too.

On good days, I catch his sleek Porsche winding down the tree-lined drive. On better days, I steal a glimpse of his handsome profile as we pass in the hall. And on the absolute best day, I find him alone at the bar, looking for company.

“Come have a seat.”

Those four little words set me down a path I never could have imagined. Private planes, penthouse suites, and temptations around every corner make it impossible to keep my distance. His world feels decadent and wild—but overindulgence comes with a cost. Every kiss comes with strings. Every erotic encounter is a promise I’m not ready to keep.

When I pump the brakes, he hits the gas. James doesn’t want to go slow—he wants a commitment.

And the thing about the fortunate ones?

They’re used to getting what they want.

OUR REVIEW

Charli and I were both lucky enough to receive an ARC of The Fortunate Ones, and we could not wait to read and discuss it! This was the first R.S. Grey novel that Charli has read, and I was so excited to introduce her to Grey’s writing. R.S. Grey happens to be one of my absolute favorite authors, and I’m always ecstatic when she has a new book coming out. The Fortunate Ones was no exception!

Charli and I sat down and talked about the book when we finished and our thoughts are below. We decided to try something new, so make sure you let us know what you think!

Emily: Oh my goodness Charli! I finished The Fortunate Ones and it was so good! I loved it. I have to know what you thought?

Charli: I loved it!! It was so well written, and had a great
flow. I don’t understand why I’m just now reading something
from the wonderful R.S. Grey!

Emily: I told you that you would love her! This book is probably my new favorite by her. It was definitely a five star read. It was funny, and so well written. I am so impressed she published this so soon after having her daughter.

Charli: I know! She really did a phenomenal job of creating
characters with depth, as well as creating a really good plot.
Plus it was set in Austin, which is so cool since she spoke
about places I frequent.

Emily: That is really cool! I need to find an author who wants to write about my home town in Ohio! Because who doesn’t love the Buckeye state!

(I couldn’t see Charli, but I’m going to assume she rolled her eyes at my lameness. At least she’s used to it at this point 😂)

Charli: So what did you think about Brooke, and her
experiences at the high end country club she worked at?

Emily: I really liked Brooke, and the fact that she was working at the country club while looking for a new job as an au pair. I’ve always thought it would be so much fun to be an au pair to a good family. Plus it’s a unique position you don’t read a lot about in romance. At least romance that doesn’t center around shenanigans with the babysitter. I actually worked for a family in high school who belonged to a local country club and Grey did a fantastic job of portraying that environment! Did you like Brooke’s character?

Charli: There were both things I loved and didn’t love
about her. She was strong, witty, stubborn, and a
driven character. I loved how she had her heart set on
traveling the world so she could put her Spanish and
French skills to use. Some of the things I didn’t like
about her was how she acted out with her relationship
with James.

Emily: Oh James! He was such a sexy character. Plus he was older which is a huge plus for me since I’m now closer to 40 than I am 30. And James made being in your late 30s look fantastic. The way Grey described him in a suit made me super swoony. Is swoony even a word? All I know is that James is super sexy, and can definitely fill out a suit in the most amazing way possible!

Charli: I was hardcore swooning over James myself!
He was sensitive, powerful, strong, and a total alpha
character. Plus he wasn’t afraid to admit that he was looking
for a wife, and wanted to settle down and start a family.

Emily: When he said he wanted a wife I may have raised my hand in the air and volunteered as tribute. I mean, Brooke was so wish washy about the whole wife and kids thing and if she wasn’t going to step up, I would have gladly taken her place!

Charli: Yes! That’s why I was so irritated with Brooke.
So many times I just wanted to shake her because she
was blowing things out of proportion that didn’t need to be
such a big deal!

Emily: I know! Sometimes her actions were super frustrating but then looking back at how I was at her age, I completely understood why Grey wrote her character that way. She had to grow as a person, and work through her own demons before she could grow with James.

Charli: It was definitely heartbreaking but incredible
to read about how much she grew and matured into exactly
who she needed to be. Poor James! He just had to
wait and hope she made it back to him.

Emily: This is probably one of the only romances I’ve read where the majority of the book is spent with the two main characters apart. Lovers of insta romances probably wouldn’t enjoy that aspect of the story, but for me it really worked. It was part of the charm of the story, and because I loved these two characters so much, I just kept rooting for a happy ending.

Charli: I was a little sad we never got to really experience a
relationship with these two. Their chemistry is so undeniable,
but the relationship is all over the place. I just wanted a little
more from them, but despite this I LOVED THEM TOGETHER!
The romance and relationship is so strong; it just takes a back
seat to Brooke’s character development and the movement
of the plot.

Emily: I completely agree! Despite everything that said I shouldn’t love this book, I absolutely adored it. Everything fell into place and it’s truly a work of romantic genius. I’m so glad your first R.S. Grey experience was this positive!

Charli: Me too! I definitely won’t hesitate to recommend this
one to lovers of rom-coms, slow burn romances, headstrong
heroines, and alpha males.

So there you have it. Both Charli and I gave The Fortunate Ones 5 ⭐️’s, and we were completely impressed with R.S. Grey’s writing. So make sure to one click this one today and fall in love with Brooke and James, just like Charli and I did!

“I missed you today,” he says, his heated gaze lingering on my body.

I step back, and he follows.

He looks like he’s cornering his prey.

“Apparently not enough to make it to dinner,” I point out icily.

“I called the restaurant and told them I’d be late. Didn’t they tell you?”

I cross my arms and glance away.

“Brooke.” He steps closer and gently lifts my chin, forcing me to look back at him. “Fight with me tomorrow.”

I narrow my eyes, angry with him for shelving this discussion so casually. To him, it doesn’t matter that I sat in that restaurant alone, looking like a fool for nearly two hours. He’s brushing off my anger, stepping closer and forcing his way past my defenses.

“I think I’d like to talk about it now.”

I catch the beginning of a smirk just before he leans in to kiss my cheek.

“Are you sure there isn’t anything you’d rather be doing right now?”

He uncrosses my arms and brings them up over his shoulders then steps closer, towering over me. My arms tighten around his neck, but still, I turn away, keeping my mouth from him. His breath hits my neck and he pulls me taut against his hard body, growing more impatient with every moment I try to resist.

“Brooke,” he whispers huskily.

My eyes flutter closed as he bends and presses a kiss to my cheek, my chin, then lower, tipping my head back so he can reach the smooth recess at the nape of my neck. I shiver and he groans, obviously aware of what his touch is doing to me.
