About THE BEAU & THE BELLE
Beau Fortier starred in most of my cringe-worthy teenage fantasies.
I met him when I was a junior in high school, a time that revolved exclusively around bad hair, failed forays into flirting, and scientific inquiries into which brand of toilet paper worked best for stuffing bras.
That is, until Beau moved into the small guest house just beyond my bedroom window.
A 24-year-old law student at Tulane, Beau was as mysterious to me as second base (both in baseball and in the bedroom). He was older. Intimidating. Hot. Boys my age had chicken legs and chubby cheeks. Beau had calloused hands and a jaw cut from steel. Our interactions were scarce—mostly involving slight stalking on my end—and yet deep down, I desperately hoped he saw me as more of a potential lover than a lovesick loser.
Turns out, I was fooling myself. My fragile ego learned that lesson the hard way.
Now, ten years later, we’re both back in New Orleans, and guess who suddenly can’t take his eyes off little ol’ me.
My old friend, Mr. Fortier.
But things have changed. I’m older now—poised and confident. My ego wears a bulletproof vest. The butterflies that once filled my stomach have all perished.
When I was a teenager, Beau warned me to guard my heart.
Let’s hope he knows how to guard his.
I’ve started this review several times, and no matter how I go about it, I still end up sounding like a fan girl at her first One Direction concert. Loud, obnoxious, and over the top in love with Harry Styles. Except trade out Harry for The Beau and the Belle. That’s how much I loved this book. And seriously, that’s saying a lot because I will throw down with anyone to prove my undying love for my husband Harry. But I digress…
The Beau and the Belle is, by far, the most spectacular piece of writing Ms. Grey has ever produced. All of her works before this one were just practice for this masterpiece of fiction she so lovely wrote and laid at our doorstep. Make sure you block out a good chunk of time to read this one, because once you start you won’t want to stop!
The Beau and the Belle is romantic comedy at its finest, and is hands down, my new favorite second chance romance. The novel is split into two parts. The first part focuses on a seventeen year old Lauren Leblance, who has a HUGE crush on the Tulane law school student who just moved into the small apartment on her parents property. It’s the classic teen girl falls for older boy, but it’s down so well and in such a new and refreshing way, I was never bored with the concept.
Part Two takes place ten years later, where Lauren and Beau both find themselves back in New Orleans. But this time it’s Beau who’s after Lauren. The best part of Part Two is the chase. Because Lauren definitely makes Beau work on getting her heart back and this slow burn romance feels so right!
Lauren Leblanc is one of the most adorable, funny, and awkward characters I’ve ever read. And it absolutely works. She’s so lovable in the most goofy of ways, and I instantly wanted to be her best friend. Plus, there are tons of late 90s, early 2000s pop references sprinkled throughout Lauren’s chapters which made it both reminiscent of my teens, and laugh out loud hilarious. I’m so glad I read this book in the privacy of my own home because I may have snorted a few times.
If you’ve been wanting to read a R.S. Grey book, don’t wait. This is the absolute perfect place to start, and I can guarantee you will not regret your decision!
