REVIEW: Wolf’s Mate (Shifter Rogues, #1) by Celia Kyle

Danger shouldn’t be this sexy…

Cougar shifter Abby Carter always plays it safe. That’s why she’s an accountant–no excitement, no danger, and no cocky alpha males. She loves her quiet life, but fate has other plans. When Abby uncovers the shady dealings of an anti-shifter organization, she’ll have to trust the too-sexy-for-her-peace-of-mind werewolf Declan Reed… or end up six feet under.

Declan Reed is starting over. After two years with Shifter Operations Command, it’s time to put his past behind him. Now Declan is the only thing standing between the gorgeous Abby and an early grave, and if he’s going to have any chance of keeping her alive, he’ll have to embrace the darkness he’s fought to keep at bay. But first he has to convince Abby that there’s no safer place in the world than the arms of a big bad werewolf.

My Review:

I have become such a fan of shifter novels in the past year and knew I would love this one when Forever Romance asked if I wanted an ARC. Wolf’s Mate is the first in a new paranormal romance series from Celia Kyle that follows a group of shifters out to protect their kind.

I really loved this story! It starts with the Declan and his team surveilling a company they believe might be involved with Unified Humanity, which is an organization out to kill shifters. Declan can’t keep his mind off of Abby, a cougar shifter who is currently auditing the company, or more accurate, his wolf can’t take his eyes off Abby. Declan has never felt this kind of pull to another person in his life, but he refuses to examine why that might be. When Abby discovers something in the books that puts her in immediate danger, Declan or his wolf won’t let anything happen to her…even if that means going against his alpha’s orders. Abby is shocked to find evidence that FosCo is in league with Unified Humanity, which was the organization who murdered her parents and left her with deep scars. Next thing she knows, she is being shot and kidnapped by multiple parties and has no idea who to trust…except this wolf shifter who makes her feel things she doesn’t understand.

This was such a great debut book for this series. It laid groundwork for what the rest of the series is going to look like, and I can’t wait for them. The story ran really smoothly and was well written. The action was on point and there were twists and turns that I was definitely not expecting. I loved the other shifters in this book and the loyalty and sense of family these shifters have together. Abby and Declan were intense and amazing to read about. They both find solace with each other, but they have no idea why. Even stranger, their animals seem to know what it going on with them before they do. I felt like the animals had their own voices throughout this book, which I had never read before.

Declan has a dark past that he doesn’t think anyone, let alone Abby, can overlook so he tries to keep as much distance between them as possible. Everyone that Abby has ever loved has left her so she refuses to let someone else inside her heart. These two keep fighting each other, but their animals refuse to let them ignore what is between them for long.

I recommend this book to those who love: shifter romance, paranormal, romantic suspense, and tight knit groups.

Overall Rating: 4/5 Stars!
