Doppelbanger; A person who bangs someone solely because they look similar to another person they want to bang.
At thirty-five, Gina Bourque is still playing the field. If he’s single, in his early twenties with dark hair and brooding eyes, there’s a damn good chance you’ll find him in her little black book.
Jeffrey Ryan never imagined that at nearly forty he’d find himself widowed and a single dad. But here he is—stumbling through this thing called life with two impressionable daughters watching his every move.
When Gina and Jeffrey meet while cruising the Caribbean, sparks fly and not in a good way. He’s too old. Too blond. Too stiff. Yet she’s still drawn to him like a moth to a flame. She’s too vulgar. Too sassy. Too wild. But she ignites something inside of him he can’t ignore.
We all know what happens when you play with fire. . . someone’s bound to get burned.
Doppelbanger was the first book that I’ve read from Heather Orgeron but I’ve been really curious to see what her books were about. Plus I knew that this book dealt with a single father, who was also a widow, and I’m not going to lie, those guys really have a special place in my heart. Most guys might have this really tough exterior, but then they get around their kids, and it’s like all pretense is gone. It’s always makes my heart swell, and I love books that make my heart overflow with ooey gooey feelings.
This book is about Gina, who is a single woman in her thirties, and a self certified cougar. She stays away from guys her age because they are normally looking to settle down, and start a family, and that just simply isn’t in the cards for her. So instead, she goes with the ones that she knows are only in it for a one night stand, and that she won’t have to share anything personal with. It’s worked for her for a long time, and she lives vicariously through her best friend’s children. When her best friend gives birth to twin girls, Gina decides to take her three godsons on a cruise through the Caribbean but doesn’t except to run into Jeffrey.
Jeffrey is a single dad of two girls, who lost his wife Jessica. He’s trying really hard to be the best dad that he can be, but he’s struggling with insecurities that any dad would have. He has a tween aged daughter, and a three year old little girl who is an absolute doll. When he first meets Gina, he immediately dislikes her, but can’t help to notice that she’s absolutely stunning. After repeated run ins, the two decide to indulge in a friends with benefits situation for the week, neither expecting for real feelings to become involved.
This book was definitely funny and it kept my attention. It was also an incredibly fast read, which I enjoyed after some longer ones. However, it was a little two light for me, and I felt like even though it was a romantic comedy, the author missed some really good opportunities to make the story a little deeper and not so superficial. For me, there was so much more that could have been done with the story, and because of that, I found the plot line to be a little lacking.
Overall, this was still a fun read, and I’m glad to have finally read this author, and next time I’m looking for a quick, fun read, I’ll definitely be looking her up!
