Title: Let There Be Light
Series: Twin Hearts Duet #1
Author: A.M. Johnson
Genre: Coming-of-Age/New Adult/MM
Release Date: November 16, 2018
His world was water and rhythm. Hard work and drive kept Royal O’Connell one step ahead of his competition. His spot on the swim team, keeping his scholarship, was the only plan that mattered.
His world was ebony and ivory. Natural talent and ambition set Camden Morgan apart from the other music majors. His dedication scoring him a full ride.
Normally, their paths would have never crossed….
But when Royal meets his best friend’s new roommate, his big plan and Camden’s controlled environment faces a variable that could destroy it all.
The world they live in had no room for error. That undeniable pull between them was dangerous and neither one of them could’ve prepared for the choice they’d have to make.
Love isn’t always an easy road and, when everything they’ve worked for is on the line, they’ll have to decide if being together is worth the risk.

Let me start by saying that this is my first A.M. Johnson book and I really did enjoy it. I am a sucker for college romance and when you throw in MM, I was ready to love this story. I did really like it, but I did not love it.
I thought the writing was fantastic and the storyline was there, but it fell a little flat for me. The reason for this, I did not connect with the characters as much as I would have liked. I wanted to feel more and feel like I was living this story with them.
Royal and Camden were perfect for each other. I loved how they balanced each other out and how Royal was able to pull Camden out of his shell. The story of coming into one’s self is one of my favorites because it is so fun to see the journey. To see these two figure out who they are at a time when so many things are uncertain on top of figuring out their feelings for each other was beautiful to witness.
I will continue reading this series because I want to read the twin sister’s book. I think it is going to be something special.
Overall Rating: 3.5/5 Stars!
This is such a hard review for me to write. Like Charli, I really enjoyed this book. I loved the idea of the story with two college students finding themselves and each other, plus I always enjoy a good M/M romance. And while I wanted to absolutely fall head over heels in love with this book, I struggled to find my footing for the better part of it. So rather than loving this story like I had hoped, I liked it, but felt like there was potential for more there.
This is the first book I’ve read by AM Johnson and the writing was solid, albeit a bit too flowerly for my tastes. There were so many descriptors about everyone’s feelings and the surroundings, that it actually made it more difficult for me to connect with the characters. I struggled with Royal and Camden, not because I didn’t like them, but because I couldn’t form a truly deep connection with them. I felt like I knew them on the surface, but not deep down, like I do when a character crawls under my skin and won’t get out.
However, with all that being said, this is still a solid story, with a great storyline and good writing. It was still a really good new adult, M/M romance, and I did enjoy the time that I took to read it. I wanted to see what would happen with Camden and Royal and I was still invested in the story, just not as deeply as I had hoped for. I was really rooting for these two to find their happily ever after. The relationship these two characters had and developed at a time when everyone is a bit lost and trying to find themselves with a moving journey to be on, and I enjoyed my time with them.
I’m not giving up on AM Johnson by any means, and I still think this book was good and worthy of a read. I’m excited to read the next book, because I feel like there’s a lot to Royal’s sister’s story that we don’t even know yet. Plus, I want to go back now and read the Avenue Ink series and find out Royal and Indie’s parents story!
