REVIEW: Lord of the Fading Lands (Tairen Soul, #1) by C.L. Wilson

1584974Once he drove back the darkness.
Once he loved with such passion his name was legend.

Once, driven wild with grief over the murder of his beloved, the majestic Fey King Rain Tairen Soul had laid waste to the world before vanishing into the Fading Lands. Now, a thousand years later, a new threat draws him back into the world—and a new love reawakens the heart he thought long dead.

Ellysetta, a woodcarver’s daughter, calls to Rain in a way no other ever had. Mysterious and magical, her soul beckons him with a compelling, seductive song—and no matter the cost, the wildness in his blood will not be denied.

As an ancient, familiar evil regains its strength, causing centuries-old alliances to crumble and threatening doom for Rain and his people… he must claim his truemate to embrace the destiny woven for them both in the mists of time.

It has been a long, long time since I have read an adult fantasy series that I literally could not put down until I finished. I am so mad that I took so long to read this book, but the cover is pretty bad, which is why I kept looking past it. However, people kept recommending it so I started on Sunday and I am already on book 3.

This book has many of my favorite elements that I love to see in fantasy: soulmates, magic, fantastical creatures, and prophecies. This was a well written and well done first book in the series. It did a great job of setting up the world and introducing me to all of the key players. I was swept up in this beautiful paranormal romance that has had me devouring their story.

Rain is a tortured soul who has taken the last one thousand years to grieve for his loss and regain his sanity after scorching the world. His soul was dark and heavy from the people he killed during the Mage Wars. He is desperate to save his people and the tairen, which starts his journey to find the soul who will change his very long life. Rain is your typical fey who is protective beyond measure and the epitome of strength. He is beautiful and willing to risk everything for his people.

Ellysetta is a bright and beautiful soul who is an enigma. She is a mortal who had always shied away from all things magic due to her mother’s warnings growing up. She has no idea why a soul as powerful as Rain would claim her as his truemate, but as their journey continues, they discover Ellysetta has more to her than being a simple woodcarver’s daughter. I loved Ellie’s kindness and humbleness. She is the perfect match for Rain and I loved seeing her come into her own.

I highly recommend this series!
