Title: Beautifully Broken Pieces
Series: Sutter Lake #1
with elements of Suspense
A woman who’s lost everything.
Taylor is looking for peace and quiet away from the memories of all she’s lost. A small mountain town where no one knows her seems like the perfect escape.
A man battling the ghosts of his past.
Walker loves his life just the way it is. His town, his family, his brothers in blue. Everything simple and easy—until a chance encounter changes it all.
When Taylor’s solitude is interrupted by the rugged cop, they find that the very thing they were avoiding might be just what they both need. As their iron wills clash and passion flares…a killer lurks.
And you never know who might be caught in the crosshairs.
I’ve been looking forward to this book since I finished Catherine’s debut, Further to Fall. It was one of my favorite reads of 2018, and I was blown away knowing it was a debut. Catherine has some of the best writing and character development that I’ve read in a long time, and as a reader of romance, she’s definitely not one that you want to be missing out on. Her writing gets even better with each book, and I cannot wait to see what she does with the remainder of the Sutter Lake series.
Beautifully Broken Pieces is essentially the story of two broken people that come together to heal each other, at a time in their lives when they’ve resolved themselves to always being alone. Taylor has recently lost her mother, and her grief has caused her to build walls around her heart. Her biggest worry is getting too close to anyone again, and having them feel sorry for her, or worse yet, to lose them too. Walker has his own demons he’s grappling with, and circumstances at his job are making it difficult to enjoy what should be one of the greatest times of his life.
As always, Catherine blew me away with her storytelling. Once I started Beautifully Broken Pieces, I forget everything that was going on around me and became instantly immersed in the story. I was completely enamored by Walker, my heart broke for Taylor, and I could feel the love that the Cole family had as they allowed her into their lives.
If you’re a big fan of small town romances, or romantic suspense with a small town feel, Beautifully Broken Pieces is definitely a novel that you will want to seek out and read. It will definitely make my top reads of the year list, and I cannot wait to see what other gems Catherine has in store for me.
I am such a huge fan of Catherine and the stories that she tells. I was blown away with how good her debut was and I knew this book was going to be no different. Catherine is a phenomenal storyteller and the growth that her characters experience over the course of her books is incredible.
I was so happy that the crew from Further to Fall made cameo appearances in this book because I loved catching up with them. I also can’t tell you how excited I am to see these other side characters get their own book. I love small town books with a big focus on family, and then Catherine went and threw in some romantic suspense, which had me salivating for more.
Taylor has been grieving her mom for several months and she is just looking for some isolation when she moves to Sutter Lake. Taylor doesn’t want to let anyone else in due to the fear of losing them, and has built steel enforced walls around her heart. However, Walker and his family refuse to let that happen. Slowly, this sweet and loving family break her walls down and show her what it is like to live again. None do this better than a man who has experienced immense grief himself. I loved Taylor’s strength and vulnerability. She showed tremendous growth in this book.
Walker experienced unimaginable grief at an early age. He thought he lost his one chance at love when his high school sweetheart died in a tragic way. Then Taylor shows up in his life and makes him feel things he has never felt before. He will fight to make sure he gets to keep Taylor in his life, especially when someone is hunting women in this small community. Walker is a protective, sweet, considerate, and passionate man who will do anything for his loved ones.
I was not ready for the romantic suspense element in this story. I thought I had it all figured out and then Catherine comes in with a twist that I was not expecting. I love being surprised like that!
