REVIEW: Clutch (Forbidden Desires #1) by Piper Scott and Virginia Kelly

ClutchTitle: Clutch
Author: Piper Scott and Virginia Kelly
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publication Date: October 8, 2018

Bookish, snarky, and fiercely independent Nate Boudreaux leads a solitary life. Between teaching classes at the university and working toward his PhD, he doesn’t need a partner to occupy his time, and he certainly doesn’t need a man like Alistair Drake complicating his future.

Alistair Drake, black sheep of the tremendously wealthy Drake family, is more interested in adding another notch to his bedpost than another zero to his bank account. When a Grindr message brings him to Nate’s doorstep, then straight to his bed, he has no reason to believe that what they share will be more than a simple hookup, until, three months later, a tug on his soul informs him otherwise.

For the Drake family has a secret—one that will force Nate and Alistair together as much as it will demand that they be torn apart. One that Alistair and his brothers have carried all their lives… and one that Alistair and Nate’s future children will carry, too.

Bound to each other by the three precious impossibilities, Nate and Alistair have no choice—no matter the consequence, they will fight for their forbidden clutch.

Clutch is a 64,000 word steamy omegaverse mpreg-ish romance that will leave you in stitches. It contains a Grindr hook-up gone very wrong (or very right); giant magical lizards; a pig named Olive; a wank throne; and a HEA, right down to the white picket fence.

So, I honestly don’t even know where to start on this review.  Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Clutch, but it also left me with my mouth hanging up 90% of the time.  It was just so completely over the top, and I’m pretty sure that I’m not built for the alpha/omega mpreg universe.

Clutch starts off with a pretty hot and heavy Grindr hookup between Nate, a Omega who is in heat, and Alastair, a horny alpha.  A few weeks go by, and Nate realizes that things aren’t normal.  And that’s when the real fun starts to happen.  This is also about the same time that I messaged and Charli and told her I completely missed the whole dragon part of the description and I was pretty sure I was going crazy.  Nate ends up laying eggs (yes, you read that right) because Alastair is not only an Alpha, he’s also a DRAGON ALPHA.

Alastair and Nate end up running away to protect their clutch from the dragon council, and the rest of the book is mixed with lots of humor, romance, and political dragon intrigue.  Alastair and Nate’s relationship continues to grow, and we learn more about the ins and outs of how giving birth to a dragon clutch works.

I really enjoyed the romance between the two main characters in this one, and thought it was a great M/M romance.  What I struggled with was more the whole Alpha/Omega thing and honestly, the whole dragon thing.  And I’m not sure why, because I’ve read a ton of Ruby Dixon’s alien romances and didn’t even think twice, but something about the whole dragon thing really threw me for a loop.  You can ask Charli.  I left her many a rambling message trying to wrap my head around the whole thing.

I started the next book in the series right after finishing Clutch, and ended up giving up on it half way through.  Not because it was bad, but I realized that this universe just wasn’t for me.  The writing was solid though, and the world building with the dragons was super unique and definitely kept me interested in the story, which is why I still ended up giving it a 4 rating!  So, in conclusion, this one was good, but probably not a world I’ll dive into again!

4 Stars!
