MOVIE REVIEW: After by Anna Todd

42299840.jpgIf I haven’t mentioned it before, I’m mentioning it now.  After by Anna Todd is one of my favorite romance series ever written.  I’ve read the first book, After, at least five times.  I can’t get enough of Tessa and Hardin and I seriously thrive on the angst between these two.  And if you’ve read these books, you know that there is SO.  MUCH.  ANGST.  When I found out we were getting a movie, I was so excited and I’ve been stalking everything that I can find on the movie since the announcement.  So you can bet your pennies, that as soon as I saw tickets were on sale for Thursday night, I clicked BUY real quick.  I had to see how they were going to make this work, and my feelings for Hero Fiennes-Tiffin as Hardin Scott were still up in the air (probably because he’s not Harry Styles, but who am I to judge).

So, upon getting to the theater, me and three other friends entered the movie and settled into our seats with baited breath to see what was going to happen.  Actually, three of us were excited.  My best friend was only there because I drug her along and she had no idea what she had even signed up for.  I knew that they had changed the movie from what had happened in the book, taming Hardin’s character a bit and making the storyline tighter to fit into the format of an hour and a half movie.

The movie started out very closely to the book, and I immediately fell in love with Josephine Langford as Tessa.  She was perfect and everything that I wanted to see in Tessa.  Her look, her facial expressions, and her voice were exactly as I had pictured Tessa as I was reading.  When Hero was introduced, I honestly wasn’t hooked right away as Hardin.  I thought his look was off, and his accent wasn’t right and he just wasn’t angsty enough.  Despite that, I soldiered on and by the end of the movie I ADORED HERO.  He was perfect, and everything I wanted Hardin to be.  I should feel creepy thinking he was also super hot considering the fact that I could probably be his mom, but he was insanely attractive in this movie.

Overall, I loved the movie and I haven’t been able to stop thinking of it.  Three of the four of us that went to see it absolutely loved it and we all got a bit teary eyed at the end.  I seriously hope that we get another movie, because I need more of this story in my life.  I’m obsessed with these characters, and I cannot wait to find the time to go and see this one again before it leaves theaters.  This is probably one of my favorite adaptations, and I think it stems from the fact that After was one of the first books that I read in the New Adult genre and that it holds such a special place in my heart, and the fact that it is the story that got me into fanfiction in the first place!

All in all 4.5 Stars for the After Movie!!!

About the Book

22557520.jpgTessa is a good girl with a sweet, reliable boyfriend back home. She’s got direction, ambition, and a mother who’s intent on keeping her that way.

But she’s barely moved into her freshman dorm when she runs into Hardin. With his tousled brown hair, cocky British accent, tattoos, and lip ring, Hardin is cute and different from what she’s used to.

But he’s also rude—to the point of cruelty, even. For all his attitude, Tessa should hate Hardin. And she does—until she finds herself alone with him in his room. Something about his dark mood grabs her, and when they kiss it ignites within her a passion she’s never known before.

He’ll call her beautiful, then insist he isn’t the one for her and disappear again and again. Despite the reckless way he treats her, Tessa is compelled to dig deeper and find the real Hardin beneath all his lies. He pushes her away again and again, yet every time she pushes back, he only pulls her in deeper.

Tessa already has the perfect boyfriend. So why is she trying so hard to overcome her own hurt pride and Hardin’s prejudice about nice girls like her?

Unless…could this be love?
