Her world was color. Canvas and paint. Indie O’Connell lived inside her head. Her voices the muse. And as a freshman at St. Peter’s College, all she wanted, was to create a name for herself with the brush in her hand.

His world was over. Despite his humble upbringing, Kai Carter seemed to have it all. Captain of the swim team and a full scholarship. His golden boy status a mask he had to wear to keep his dream and his family afloat. All the pieces of his life dangled precariously from his fingertips.

Forced to fight a battle he’d never signed up for, Kai’s loyalty turned out to be his undoing, and like a good captain, no matter what the cost, he’d gone down with the ship.

They never planned for their worlds to collide.
He was her brother’s best friend.

She was supposed to be invisible.

Off limits.

Being together, regardless of how much they wanted it, was a line they’d never cross. But when lives get messy, lines get blurred, and in love, nothing is ever black and white.

I’ve written this review twice now, and both times my computer, or WordPress has gotten hungry and eaten it. So, third time’s a charm right? Hopefully I can get all my thoughts out this time without them doing a disappearing act.

A few months back, Charli and I both read Let There Be Light. While we liked the book, we didn’t love it. We both had a hard time connecting to the characters and really getting into the story. However, the one person I didn’t have a hard time connecting to was Indie, and I was desperate to hear her story. And then there was the mysterious Kai, who was obviously hiding things, and struggling with demons of his own. Add that to the fact that he avoided Indie at all costs, and I just knew there was a story there, struggling to find its way out. And A.M. Johnson did not disappoint when it came to these two. This book was beautifully crafted and lovingly executed, and I couldn’t be more proud as a reader to have spent the time with these characters.

Indie has always struggled with demons. Her mental health has plagued her, but with the strength and support of her family, plus counseling she’s learned to overcome, and puts her pain into her art. It’s her way of coping with her struggles, and it’s cathartic to her. Indie doesn’t need to be the center of attention, and she’s always been ok with living in her brother Royal’s shadow. Her love for her brother and her family is incredible, and one of the driving forces of this story. Though flawed, Indie is a beautiful person, and a wonderful, generous character, and I am so happy to see her find happiness.

Kai also has secrets and struggles. He’s tried to be the perfect poster boy, keeping his struggles a secret. As his life slowly starts to crumble, he finds himself putting himself in danger’s way more and more. One fateful night leads him to change the entire course of his life, putting him directly in Indie’s path. And with Indie, he finally feels whole, even though he doesn’t believe he’s good enough for her. They begin to spend time together in secret, but like all secrets, it eventually gets out.

Honestly, after finishing Seven Shades of You, I was a mess of emotions. This book is honest and raw, but at the same time sweet and emotional. I couldn’t put it down, and Johnson’s writing pulled me right into the story. She has a way with words that is so poetic, you forget where you are and become completely immersed in the story.

I cannot recommend Seven Shades of You enough. I’ve read some truly amazing books lately, and this is definitely one of them!
