I had my life figured out.
Engaged to a successful man.
About to make partner at my firm.
Bought a high-rise apartment in downtown Dallas.
And then, poof, it’s all gone. Now, like in some cheesy romantic comedy, my car has broken down in the pouring rain on my way to “find myself” in The Middle of Nowhere, Texas. Cue hot guy coming to my rescue and changing my tire. This is the part where we flirt and have a meet-cute, right? That’s how it works in romance novels, and I should know—after all, I’m coming to Texas to write my own cowboy romance. But nope. This sexy cowboy lights into me about not being prepared for the country roads and how inappropriate my high-heeled boots are.
Little did I know, Jason Jenks would tilt my world into a new dimension with his sinful smirk and his bad attitude. Every time I turn around, he’s there to reluctantly save the day. And every time, I think there may be something to that spark we ignite. But there’s a reason the majority of country songs are about broken hearts. The closer I get to this man, the closer I get to learning the truth about cowboys.
I have a confession. Aside from the few cowboy books from Kennedy Fox, I haven’t ever really read a cowboy romance. They’re just not books that come across my radar very often, and I don’t make a habit of seeking them out. However, The Truth About Cowboys kept popping up all over my Instagram feed and just wouldn’t stop nagging at me, so I felt compelled to read it. I’m super glad that I did, because I really enjoyed this story of love after tragedy, and how it emphasized how incredibly important family can be.
Jessica is down on her luck after walking in and finding her lawyer fiancé in bed with his secretary. After taking her anger out on her firm’s biggest client, the partner’s quietly suggest she take a leave of absence until she can calm down and get her life on track. Taking the opportunity to write a book on divorce, Jessica heads out to the Texas countryside and finds herself in the middle of a rainstorm face to face with an angry, disgruntled cowboy. After he manages to rescue her from a puddle, and send her own her way, Jessica can’t seem to get the brooding man from her thoughts. It doesn’t help either when she finds out that the cabin that she was rented belongs to him and his grandmother.
Jason Jenks lost his parents in a horrible accident, and they left him with the family ranch, that is quickly falling apart at the seams. After leaving a sucessful baseball career, Jason is back on the ranch, trying to keep it afloat, and keeping the worst of the troubles from his grandmother. Having Jessica on the ranch, snooping in his business, is the absolute LAST thing he needs in his life. Yet, despite all his misgivings, Jason can’t seem to keep himself away from the spunky brunette who irritates him as much as she turns him own.
So, in all honesty, Jason Jenks is a complete ass for 90% of the book, and Jessica had considerably more patience than I would ever have for one man’s stupidity. However, I know that he was only doing these things because he was a. really blind to what was happening around him, b. a typical man, and c. scared of what the future might hold for him and his family especially if he let Jessica into his life. Thank goodness for his grandmother for setting him straight and for being an absolute angel in this book.
This was my first Lisa Renee Jones books, but I really enjoyed this little guilty pleasure. I already have book two ready to go on my shelves and I can’t wait to see what type of love story she gives to Jason’s best friend!
